Let's say we're making a site about LCD's.
People search lcd's either by brand name:
sony lcd
samsung lcd
dell lcd
they also search by size
15 inch lcd
17 inch lcd
19 inch lcd
These could all be silos.
My point:
I'm sure within the samsung lcd silo there is a 19 inch samsung lcd,
and
within the 19 inch lcd silo there is samsung lcd.
What is the best way to handle this?
My guess is to create both types of silos to benefit the
2 ways visitors search for lcd's and when there is an overlap
create unique content for each article.
Charles and Russell, what do you suggest.
Thanks,
Jeremy |

Jeremy,
The answer to you question depends on how far you Zoom in or out of a business model.
In my opinion, the LCD size is extremely specific and will occur at the bottom of the Brand Name Silo. Organizing by brands is one way to do it . . . unless you are going much wider than these products.
ARE YOU GOING A MILE WIDE AND AN INCH DEEP, OR ARE YOU GOING IN INCH DEEP AND A MILE WIDE??????
WHAT ARE YOU SELLING?
The decision to target specific versus general terms is up to you! The brand is general , the product specs are totally specific. Did you read the DOC? Look at the Cabelas model.
I think it is time for a conference call.

I'll read through the document again,
I read it late last night, too excited to fall
asleep.

I took a look at the Cabelas model,
it is very wide and deep, the top of the silos is basically
like a link directory which guides the visitor to the specific
products which offers a picture and useful content.
This would be a good model if you are reviewing physical
products, which is what I have been doing with my sites,
reviewing products, but without silo-ing.
What am I selling? physical products, so the top of my
silos would be a link directory leading to specific products
at the bottom of the silos.

One more, just so I'm clear, from what I have seen
on the tooth model as far as linking.
Example: silo with 10 pages
Top silo page link to page 2 thru 10
then
page one links to 2
page 2 links to 3
page 3 links to 4
and so on
But also,
page 2 links back to one
page 3 links back to 2
page 4 links back to 3
Is this correct.
Thank you,
Jeremy
P.S. Thank you Charles and Russell for teaching us this,
I don't see any other so called gurus teaching this.
Is it because they don't know about it, or because it
works so well, they want to keep it a secret. |

Hi Jeremy, it's my understanding that you don't need to do this (although some of the diagrams do have the arrows pointing both ways).
I have done this with one of my sites, because the first three pages are all a continuation of one article, and I thought that if, for example, the reader landed on page 2 of the article, it would make sense to be able to go back to page 1 if they hadn't yet read it. However, with my other sites I've just gone 1 -> 2 -> 3 etc.
Cheers

I think linking back is user friendly plus it strengthens
the keyword fortress.
I've linked my other sites related pages to related
pages but not organized, but my thinking was,
how would a spider strengthen its web,
by having more interconnected links, making
it finer.
The internet is all about linking related websites
and pages together in some kind of logical fashion.
What do you think Charles and Russell.
Thanks,
Jeremy |
