I read as part of the breakdown of Google's patent that domains should be registered for at least 2 years to avoid penalty in the SERPs.

My immediate problem is one of cost ... one domain per week at about $18.00 per domain (2 years) comes to approximately $72 every 4 weeks.

I would assume that it would take approximately 6 months or more before the first website built would perhaps rank high enough to begin seeing a bit of income ... considering of course I did everything correctly.

My question is would Google penalize websites built using a subdomain such as website#1.subdomain.com, website#2.subdomain.com etc?

This would be a much more cost effective option for me at this time.

Thank You

I don't think Google penalizes subdomains, but the problem with subdomains is most of the directories don't allow you to submit them EVEN if you've created them to be individual websites in their own right.

I bought my first domain names and hosting at GoDaddy and didn't know about hosting multiple domains on one hosting account (which you can't with my hosting at GoDaddy) although the amount of hosting you get there (size wise) is huge! (5000MB Hosting and 250GB bandwidth for only $3.19 a month!) I have a website with over 500 pages, and a heap of stuff stored on my server - and I've used only 157MB of the total 5000...I'll need one heck of a big website to fill it!

BUT when you can only host one domain that space is largely wasted unless it's a big site. So, I figured, I'd need subdomains (when I got the account you could only have 10 subdomains and now you can have 25 because they've upgraded something). So, I happily went about making subdomains, and then started submitting to the directories last week, only to have them all rejected!

I guess what I'm saying, is that you can't really build according to The Plan using subdomains as you have to be able to submit to directories (and all you'd be able to submit would be your main domain - which might not be very relevant if you've got a very general domain name and specific niches for your subdomains).

It's definitely hard with the cost though! I've been buying one year domains from iPowerweb (at $2.95 each) because that's all I can afford if I'm buying one a week! I'd prefer to get at least 2 year domains though (the second year at iPowerweb is $8.25 - so it would still be cheaper to get a 2 year domain from them than from most other places).

Although, I'm really considering getting a two year domain to see if it does make a big difference! I figure next year when I'm making money, I'll happily renew for 5 or 10 years for each!

Cheers
Fiona

Bob & Fiona,

Check out IPower.com at http://ipower.com/domain-names.html for regsitering your domains cheaply.

$2.95 for one year or $11.20 for two years, which works out to $5.60 per year. Quite the deal!

Check out HostGator.com http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml for hosting unlimited domains with their "Baby Plan" at only $9.95 per month.

As far as subdomains go, I posted on another topic about this and here is what I wrote:

"There is one other very important reason to NOT use subdomains on future niches you develop. It occurred to me after I went down this route myself with a main domain and a bunch of baby subdomains.

If, at any time in the future, one of your niche sites takes off and you want to sell or lease it out for an enormous profit, you won't be able to break off the subdomain (by creating a new domain name) from the main domain without losing some if not all of your rankings and links."

Thanks for the Good info.

Very helpful in the beginning. I don't have any job and I need to be on the fast track fast.

I just came out from a 3 months mentoring program when the owner kept all the money we made...

Just one question: I just finished my first website according to the plan, and I want to know if there is no restriction with Ipower.com (I use Godaddy usually.)

Thanks for help.

Here is my first site: See in the new thread.

Thanks folks for the info - it's great to have such a helpful community!

Thanks Fiona for letting me know about the directory rejection of the subdomains - that could really hurt!

Thanks JoeCool for letting us know about the inability to break off a subdomain to sell if the niche website really took off.

JoeCool mentioned http://ipower.com/domain-names.html and I noticed that the .info domains are on sale at $5.90 for 2 years - almost too good to be true.

Does anyone have experience with using the .info domain extension vs. the .com or .net extension and how they might be viewed by the search engines and directories?

Thanks again

p.s I do host with HostGator and really like the idea of unlimited domain names

I have all .com domains, except I recently bought a PR3 .info domain for $15 I figured that with the page rank it was worth it. I honestly don't know why one extension should be different to another, but some people think .info aren't as good.

I shouldn't think the extension would affect the rankings in the SERPs though!

Cheers
Fiona

Oh, and I also use hostgator now and iPowerweb for all my hosting and domain names. I chose Godaddy first because of the cheap hosting, and then I realized that it wasn't so cheap at all considering I could only host one domain!

read the find print
http://ipower.com/domain-names.html

* Note: Limit 50 domain names per customer at special $2.95 pricing. Pricing valid for first year only. Domains will renew at $8.25 at time of renewal, unless volume pricing arrangements have been made.

still a good deal..

I use 1and1.com thier $5.99 but you can ONLY register for 1yr at a time
i hope they change that soon

Here's something I hadn't noticed before...

I saw people promoting iPower and assumed it was the same as iPowerWeb, but check out the websites and they appear to be two different domain registrars, both offering $2.95 domain names (both for the first year only)

What this means, I guess, is if one limits you to 50 domain names at that price, you can always go to the other!

I've been using iPowerWeb and certainly haven't had a problem with them at all!

The two companies, however, seem to have a lot in common...so whether it's one riding the coattails of the other, or they're both owned by the same people, I don't know!

Oh wait! They both have the same phone number for support so I guess they are owned by the same company, but it doesn't seem to me that buying your domains from one would limit the number of domains you could buy from the other.

Cheers
