I dug the old powerbom out yesterday and dusted it off. I used it to find a lot of keyword phrases that have under 1000 competing webpages when searched on Google with quotes on.

Is that a good way to find keyword phrases that I should target? I would like to start out a few of my sites that use The Plan with keywords that are easy to rank well with and then move up into the harder keywords.

Thanks,
TimS

That's a great way to start Tim.

I go even further than that.

My first 50 articles have a competition in google
ranging from ZERO to 100.

There are tons of keywords that have good demand
and no competition or just 10 competing pages.

Also I write content for my home page and main menu
pages Using competitive high paying adsense keywords.
If I don't rank high for them, I don't care.

So people find my site with the less competitive pages
and go to my main menu pages, then click on my

higher paying adsense ads. Very Happy

The way I've seen it done is to do a search like this: allintitle:home loans

or whatever. This will show you how many competing pages there are that have the keyword in their <title> tag, which is a major step in optimizing, so these are probably fairly relevant competitors.

When you say KEI,

I assume you mean keyword effective index from Wordtracker, created by Sumantra Roy?

I also assume that you are using Wordtracker as your sample for terms that have demand (from Dogpile and the other 2 databases that Wordtracker draws their keywords)?

Have you looked at your own website keyword stats to see where the majority of your traffic comes from once you have started creating your KEI driven content?

KEI is a messy subject, because every database is different.

I have found that the success of many KEI driven models is mainly . . . a placebo. Folks start feeling secure about these terms . . . which gets them busy on the important stuff . . . like generating content related to those High KEI topics.

The keyword here is "topic".

A close analysis of the keyword stats will reveal that the traffic comes not from the High KEI terms, but from words related to the subject matter- which comes from casting a wide net, making a decision, and getting busy.

And yes, sometime KEI is effective because it is KEI. ; - )
