I just did an interesting experiment with my site. For 6 months I have been paying for Adwords. I have been spending $1.00 for every 60 cents earned with Adsense. Not a very good return. My stats showed excellent traffic for a very broad niche -- approx. 15,000 visitors per month -- a lot of those stayed on the site for 15 minutes or more. I also have good return visitors. But I was paying through the nose for them, and that is about the maximum number to expect per month according to WordTracker.
Last week I cut my Adword expense in half. Guess what. The traffic dropped by almost 40%, but my Adsense revenue stayed the same. This means that now I am spending$1.00 to make $1.00. I am picking up small profits with affiliate income.
In six months I have gained a PR3 with my site with virtually no backlinks, at least as far as Google is concerned. I do have some quality backlinks, but Google doesn't recognize them.
I am of the opinion that time and quality content are the key, but my niche is such that I will never make a lot of money. The subject is saving money, so it's hard to push stuff off on people you are trying to educate to spend little or no money.
I just thought I'd share this revelation with everyone. I'm going to maintain my existing sites and try to find another niche that can be more profitable.
If anyone has any suggestions, I would enjoy hearing what they are.

Optimize your site for organic search using TMP (the master paln) principles and get rid of at least half of your PPC spending.
Start tracking your "effective keywords" (the KWs that people actually use to pull up your PPC results) and optimize for long tails under a silo that is on target for your broader keywords.
Have you been logging and saving your effective keywords during your PPC campaigns?
Thanks,
Charles |

I would have to start all over again to build the kind of site you suggest in TMP. This particular niche (Saving Tips) is not one that I want to pursue much further because my own philosophy is to stop spending altogether except on the basic necessities. The entire niche is small, and the keywords to bring any kind of traffic are necessarily broad. I have tracked them. Digging any deeper than about five keywords or keyword phrases doesn't produce hardly any traffic at all. I would rather start anew on a niche that has more potential. This one will take care of itself in time if I keep tweeking it to at least reach an organic search level that will reduce my PPC cost. These sites have been a learning process for me, and I think I can do much better in the future.
Thanks for the tips. I will be much more attuned to them on the next project. |
