I read with interest (on another of your sites) your analysis of Google's March, 2005 patent application. One of the points related to the length of time that a domain is registered for. I think you were saying that Google might start to consider 1 year registrations as sort of "fly by night", but a 10 year registration would tend to show permanence and seriousness of purpose.
Is it your opinion that we niche builders should register names for 10 years rather than 1 year? Is that what you are doing?
Many thanks,
Doug |

Hi Doug,
I do not register for 10 years normally. It is hard to tell yet how much weight that Google is placing on this factor.
The average time that a site is registered for is 2 years. So I think that Google will have a hard time implementing this part of their proposed plan as it would effect 95% of their indexed listings.
I think that 1 year registrations are bad... I would definitely go for 2 year registrations.
It will be interesting to see how this develops in the future.
Welcome to the forum

| Registering a domain for a longer time at the start will not help you for better results in search engines immediately.Domain age do help in better search engine results and not the length of registration period. IMO, its the age of domain which helps in better results and not the registration period. |

Keep in mind the above comments are not anyones "ideas on the topic" but actual statements from Googles Patent Filing from last year stating that they're checking domain age and registration period as part of their algo.d
So while it isn't going to make the difference b/w #1 an #2 in the SERP's it's worthwhile following their rules and not allowing G to have any marks against you in their books.
