In short, my question is: Can shopping carts (list multiple products, allow the user to add items to the cart, and purchase those items) be optimized for search engines?

If yes, how? And can it be done using the silo site structure concept?

Lastly,

I will be building a site for my father-in-law and another one for myself. Both sites will start off simple. At most they'll list some products on subtheme pages but not allow for purchasing with a cart. But eventually, if things go well, I'd like to add a cart to the site.

Can a silo built site work with a cart? Or should the site be built on its own with the "articles" in subthemes, etc. and the cart would sort of stand off on its own separate of the silo-ed site?
