In answer to your question use site:www.yourdomain.com in google. You can read the advanced search commands for google and other SE's. They become handy in SEO.
I suggest you get some pagerank established via less-than-highest-quality links first. That is how high quality sites would then take you as a serious contender. |

I am listed in DMOZ and my site is No 1 in Google. I have got other sites listed in DMOZ and I have to say NOT ONE of the sites I have hand submitted since DMOZ started has ever been included. I use an automated submission tool and 'bingo' they get listed.
I know this breaks all the rules but I have been doing this since 1999 when the only way to get high rankings was by directory submission (what goes around comes around) and reciprocal links.
If you use reciprocal links you need to check very often that the links are still live pointing at you. I just had a site fall out of google, it is a members directory and up to 25% of the sites were not live or had removed their link to us. We had not checked the links for a very long time as there are a heck of a lot of them but I will be using an automated tool on a weekly basis once I get the site sorted. That one is in DMOZ and was hand submitted by someone else but it is a free resource site packed with information and was submitted in 2000.
Hope that this helps

I know at least one thing.......this business takes time! It is frustrating at times and I know that, first hand!
Even though the days of programs like Traffic Equalizer are long gone, I did use it at one time. I made a bunch of sites and NOTHING! I almost gave up and everyone on the TE Forum said....."give it time" and it did work!
Now, I must say that I did take time to put good content on the sites, and my templates looked like a blog, so I was not just a spam-machine.....
The point is this........I think that the days of putting up a site and quickly seeing a return on them, are probably pretty much over. And the more competitive a niche is, the more links you will need and so on......
Don't give up, yet. Hang in there. Try making some sites that are far less competitive.....
Try not to fall in love with just one site........that is a lesson that I learned the hard way!

Thanks for the encouragement. My biggest problem is that I created a looming monster. Because the visitors to the site tend to come back, I need to keep udating the site. I now have 128 people subscribed to my newsletter that visitors have indicated they would like to get once a week. I started a blog to get participation from visitors. I have created more work for myself than I imagined at the start. As of yesterday, I have made $36 this month. I'm still spending $2 in AdWords for every $1 I receive from AdSense. The rest comes from affiliate commissions. I'm not unhappy with my results, but my income need is much more immediate.
All of my expertise is in highly competitive markets -- insurance and real estate. There aren't many unsaturated niches in these categories.
I'll figure it out someday (if I don't go broke first).
Thanks for everyone's input. |
