I don't know how anyone has time to build a site a week and still keep everything fresh on old sites, submit new sites to directories, write fresh copy, maintain a blog, and all the other things it seems one must continue to do to make money online. Also, when do submissions to directories start having an effect. I can't seem to get any back-links from any of them. I stopped submitting at 100 to see what would happen. After nearly one month -- nothing. No links, nothing. (All directories had a >3 PR.) Only through an Adword campaign which is starting to break my budget, I have risen from 946,000 to 655,000. Seems to me it will be very costly to get to anywhere near where I need to be to begin making money. As of right now I am -$50 for one site. I know I'm doing something wrong, but I don't know what. Would someone mind critiqueing my sites and offer suggestions.

Hi, I don't know too much about directory submission yet... are they supposed to send you email that they have inserted your link, or are you checking using google. If using google, then u need to know that google shows very few of the links; so instead use yahoo or msn.
As far as adwords MAKE SURE that you grab them for something. An ebook that they can download, a course, something.... just running adwords without grabbing them is a recepie for disaster (to your bank acct). Just my 2 cents. |

Most directories will not accept adsense driven or affiliate product driven sites. This is why I say to leave all advertising off of your pages until you have gained some god listings in the directories.
If you want to learn how to focus all of your effort into one or 2 authority sites rather than managing 20, 30 or 40 sites then I would suggest that you read and implement The Master Plan.
I hope this helps,

Another thing to note is that once you have a site structure and template system is that software such as orwell pro makes page generation really easy. I love how this software makes searching for content the fun part and the page generation is pretty much automatic. Once that is done all I have to do is organise the linking and update the sitemap.
If you have that many sites, this may be a solution that is workable.

I am currently using XSitePro. It is one of the best site builders I have ever used, and yes, it's easy to build a site, but I prefer to write my own content rather than just have a bunch of articles thrown up on a site. There are far too many of these trashing the web now. I can't bring myself to do that. Nor can I bring myself to create sites that consist of nothing but AdSense ads. I have excellent content and I want to keep it that way.
My problem is that I don't know if I will ever reach top rankings in the search engines or ever develop a Google page rank. I don't want to seel all my effort go down the drain because I couldn't generate traffic. |

Hi Candee,
I took a look at your sites, and you do have good content on them. However, the two you showed both are rather competitive - most of your top 10 competition is in both DMOZ and Yahoo Directory.
You're going to need links, and a lot of them before you'll really start seeing traffic from the search engines.
I know it's easy to get discouraged, but it does take time to get good search engine rankings, especially in competitive categories. Stick with it and keep working on getting links and you'll be rewarded.

Some general points.
If your site does not have age, and if your URL to your pages are not aged (specially in google) it is VERY HARD to get ranked for competitive phrases. Certainly yahoo/dmoz listing is another competitive point.
You may try to rank for 3 to 4 letter phrases first. If you aim for one or two word competitive phrases with a new site and no massive (or trusted) incoming links and/or dmoz/yahoo listings, you are bound to get disappointed. |

I have submitted my site to DMOZ, but I understand they can take months and possibly years to review the site. I refust to pay $299/yr to get into Yahoo's directory. This may sound like a stupid question, but how does one know if their site has been indexed by Google?
I am going to be spending some time next week trying to get relative links to my site. I know I won't have hundreds and hundreds because all I want are "relative links" of extremely high quality. It will take some time to find them. I have already asked some very high quality sites that accept your link to link back, but they refused.
I also have OrwellPro and will be adding more pertinent articles to my site.
I'm also in the process of setting up a blog. So much work to do and so little time.
The best news today is that for the month of November I am $9.00 ahead between AdSense and affiliate revenue. If I didn't have to pay for traffic through Adwords, I'd be a happy camper. |

DMOZ, submit and forget about it. It may happen in 6-12 montsh, or never. Just don't resubmit too soon otherwise you will erase yourself from previous queue. There is a lot written about dmoz, suggest you google for it.
Relative links are good. If they are from the top 10 (or top xx) of the results when you search for your target phrase, so much the better. Mix up the anchor text.
Blog is good.
AdWord has a science too. You should make sure the clicks convert to 'something'. e.g. flash a course about whatever, so that the majority of incoming will signup. That is the key. Just bringing in traffic for the sake of temporary traffic is wasting your money, IMHO. |
