This interview makes me more confused than ever.
I have read the various discussions and interviews on silos and it seems that each new document/video makes things less understandable.
I have a specific question.
One aspect of silos is to choose a proper master keyword for each page of a web site (and have appropriate secondary keywords within the body)
A second aspect of silos is the presence/ absence of links between pages
Please correct me if I am wrong so far.
My question is about the linking structure.
Let us take Kerry's diagram and let us name the pages as follow:
First column
Silo1-a (master page for silo1)
silo1-b
...
silo1-e (5th keyword related to silo1)
Second column:
Silo2-a
silo2-b
...
silo5-e
I ignore the site map and contact us (they can be present on all pages)
In a classical linking menu structure, you would have a left/right/top/bottom menu on each master silo page to the various other silos:
For example, on page Silo1-a, you would have links to these pages:
Silo1-a
Silo2-a
Silo3-a
Silo4-a
Silo5-a
On a secondary page like Silo1-b, we would typically have these menus:
silo1-a
silo1-b
silo1-c
silo1-d
silo1-e
This classical navigation system makes it easy for users to navigate within the site and give the maximum weight (and PR) to the important pages
Kerry's diagram shows a totally different navigation system where you link from page to page.
To comply with the silo system, it seems all we have to do is add a link to page silo2-1 on a page like silo1-e
My question
Does it hurt to have more links than suggested in Kerry's diagram and why? |

Read this:

Kerry was speaking about the Plan which is just a very
simplified version of a larger design.
Read Sue's post carefully, it should clear things up.
